The Cumberland Lake Rock Project

The Materials I Needed for my project:

This idea came from living on the cliffs of Lake Cumberland, Ky. I have lots of rocks. So sitting on my front porch in the morning having coffee I got an idea. (This is when and where I get most of my creative ideas!!!) I came up with making a citronella candle out of a rock. So I set out after having coffee in search of the perfect rock. Once I found my rock, I asked my loving husband to drill three holes big enough to fit a wick through it. (Ask your husband the drill bit size he will know.) Then I headed to Hobby Lobby (My favorite store in town!!!!) to purchase the materials I needed. The serving tray was 50% off along with my iPhone Hobby Lobby app 40% off! Great deal!! I have a love for cherry wood stain. I knew I would stain it that color. I also needed three small glass cups to go under each drilled hole to hold the wick and citronella. (sorry I didn't take a picture of the three small glass cups) You can find theses in the candle isle at Hobby Lobby. I turned the rock over and glued the glass cup to each drilled hole, using gorilla glue.

I stained and used polyurethane on my rock and the tray. I used the same cherry stain on both. For the tray I used two coats of stain. Brushing it on and rubbing over it with a soft cloth. As you can see the stain gives a different look to each piece. I did not stain the sides of the rock or the bottom because I knew my natural small rocks would go around it. After the stained dried I added a coat of polyurethane.

My next step is to add the wick and citronella. First add your citronella with a small funnel. Place the funnel in the hole and pour. Next you want to use a pair of tweezers to feed your wick down into the three holes.

At this point I am getting excited. Getting close to finishing line of this project. Add your small natural rock. (Small natural rock can be purchased at Hobby Lobby for $1.59 a bag.) I used three bags.

I had some leftover ribbon from another project. So I made a bow. This added a soft texture to a  project with all natural elements. Light the wick and ENJOY!!! Thanks blogger for following me on this project. Remember you can Always "Be Your Own Kind Of Beautiful"
